What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is a 24-hour competition where you and up to 3 teammates (total of 4 in each team) build a software project from scratch and compete against other groups for prizes. ACM Outreach will also provide workshops, events, and activities throughout the weekend to help you learn more about the field of technology!
What if I don’t have a team?
We will randomize groups for those who signed up without other teammates! On the registration form you will indicate that you don’t have a team yet, and we’ll take care of the rest leading up to and on the day of the hackathon and group together teams. Of course, if you find a team in the meantime, that is ok too :)
When is the hackathon?
The ACM X RISD Hackathon will be held on April 20th-21st.
How much does it cost to participate?
It is completely free to participate! Hack on hacker!
What are the rules of a hackathon?
Your project must be built entirely over the course of the weekend. No previous projects or code may be used. Have fun! Your behavior must follow the regular RISD Code of Conduct.
Can I participate if I have no prior experience?
Everyone is welcome to come, and no experience is necessary to attend! We will even be hosting workshops to introduce new hackers to hackathons and web development practices in preparation for the event.
What do I need to bring to the hackathon?
You just need to bring a laptop, charger, and a hacking spirit to participate! There will also be desktop computers available to work on as an alternative as well. We will also have free food throughout the event!
Some even bring pillows, blankets, and headphones to get comfy for the long working days!
Should every member in my team fill out the registration?
Yes! This is so we can get an accurate headcount.
Where will the hackathon be?
Berkner High School!
Address: 1600 E. Spring Valley Rd. Richardson, TX 75081
Parking and other logistical details for attendees will be provided closer to the hackathon date.
What should I build?
As long as you can connect the project/solution back to the challenge brief we provide at the beginning of the hackathon, the possibilities are endless! Most students opt to build something web-development based though since we are a web-development based hackathon! Our web-dev workshops leading up to the hackathon dates will also equip you with these skills!
Will there be free swag/food?
Of course! We will have hackathon swag for all participants along with meals provided throughout the weekend!
